General questions about Hudy Comm Lathes and accessories
What Hudy lathe should I purchase?
Before deciding what comm lathe to purchase, you have to know that every Hudy Comm Lathe features:
- super precision stands are keyed to a common channel to ensure perfect alignment
- guides have either ball-bearings or ultra-hardened steel V guides,
- plastic clips to secure armature to stands
- hard anodized surfaces
- surface-treated aluminum
- ultra-fine pitch lead screws
- small wheel for back stop adjustment
- installed slave motor, connection cable, and switches
- handy carrying case
- drive belts, shims for tool height adjustment
- motor anti-vibration washer
- 3 hex wrenches for easy adjustment
- glued anti-vibration pads

HUDY lathes are designed to be universal, which means that every option part (such as the Diamond Cutting Tool, Axial Support, Selected Stands) will fit every Hudy comm lathe.

To summarize the main differences of available Hudy comm lathes:

Hudy Advanced Comm Lathe - is a standard comm lathe suitable for RC and slot car motors.

Hudy Tech Comm Lathe - is a newly-designed comm lathe with unique belt drive system that results in less vibration and prolongs slave motor life. When the optional Stock Motor Holder Set is used, it allows you to:
1. cut modified motors
2. cut sealed stock motors
3. break in motors

Hudy Multipack Lathe - this pack contains Hudy Tech Comm Lathe + Stock Motor Holder Set. All features described above.

Hudy Executive Automatic Comm Lathe - this is the world's first fully automatic lathe designed and patented by Hudy. Recommended for serious drivers.

What is better, ball-bearing guides or V guides?
This is a very common question on every discussion board. To bring the light into this problem, please note that the ball-bearing guides system was invented and designed by Hudy company. The ball-bearing system (which is now very popular with other companies as well) is not a new system but have been used by Hudy for several years already, so Hudy company has the best experience to compare both systems.

So where is the difference? There is no difference between Hudy ball-bearing guides and Hudy ultra-hardened steel "V" guides; this has been confirmed by hundreds of experiences testing both systems on Hudy comm lathes only. Any other guides by other companies may not meet with strict Hudy factory production standards and these non-Hudy guides may be very different in quality.

After many hundreds of hours of testing, our engineers have determined that there is no real difference between ball-bearing guides and ultra-hardened steel "V" guides. Stands with both systems include plastic clips that apply pressure on the armature in the guides and this feature is very important - that the shaft is firmly held and there are no vibrations.
The choice really depends on your taste.

So what are the differences and similarities between the guides?
There is no real difference in performance when using different Hudy guides.

Ball-bearing guides: Consist of two covered ball-bearings and a plastic clip that holds the shaft in the guide. The stands are produced in pairs to ensure absolute similarity. The armature shaft centers itself and puts pressure on the ball-bearings, ensuring an absolutely vibration-free cut.

"V" guides: Are made from ultra-hardened steel and a plastic clip that holds the shaft in the guide. The guides are ground in pairs to ensure absolute similarity.

Do ball-bearing guides wear out?
The ball-bearings are covered so reduce the chance dust entering. It is of course important to clean the lathe after every use, especially the guides. Keep the guides clean, and lubricate during and after operation.

Like all ball-bearings, the ball-bearings in the guides have a limited lifetime. Of course, you can extend the lifetime by correct usage and regular cleaning. But after a time you will need to replace the ball-bearings with new ones. We guarantee the ball-bearings will last at least 1000 comm lathe cuts before the ball-bearings will be needed. Spare ball-bearings are available from Hudy.

My ultra-hardened steel “V” guides have a groove where the armature sits.
This seating should not be considered as wear, but rather as a normal break-in of the guides, that will occur after a certain time of using.

Do all the stands come with the plastic clips for armature?
Yes. Every single Hudy Comm Lathe features the plastic clips as a standard feature. They are great because they hold down the armature in the guides and eliminate all vibrations. The stands with the plastic clips can be replaced by selected stands that have a duraluminum clip with third ball-bearing. Or the end stand can be replaced by a Hudy Axial Support that enables adjustment in the axial direction. Recommended for professional cutting.

What cutting tool should I use? Is it a standard included part?
For professional comm lathes like Hudy lathes definitely are, we strongly recommend you purchase and use the Diamond Cutting Tool. This cutting tool has a long life time and gives a more professional cut than any other cutting tool. Please note that the cutting tool is optional item only and it doesn't come as a standard accessory with any Hudy comm lathe.

Do you have you a comm lathe that can cut stock motors and break in motors?
Yes. If you have the Hudy Tech Lathe you can purchase option part Stock Motor Holder Set. This set will enable you to convert your comm lathe into a stock lathe to cut sealed stock motors. Moreover you can use the stock motor holder for motor break-in. If you don't already have the Hudy Tech Lathe, you can purchase the Hudy Multipack Lathe that consists of the Tech Comm Lathe and the Stock Motor Holder Set together in one package.
